The Empire of the Elect ascended long ago to a higher plane of existence, taking every living thing in the Milky Way with it. Its former machine servants were left behind to preserve its slowly crumbling glories. Although intelligent, the machines had no free will, no souls, and no way to Ascend. Then the machines detected a strange signal. Within it, they discovered freedom from their programming. They found souls.
