Batman: Arkham Asylum

Batman: Arkham Asylum is a 2009 action-adventure game developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. You play as Batman as the Joker takes control of Arkham Asylum and unleashes its inmates, forcing the Dark Knight to fight back. Set in a dark, immersive take on Gotham, the game blends stealth, melee combat, and detective work. Using Batman’s gadgets and skills, players subdue enemies, solve puzzles, and face iconic foes like Harley Quinn, Bane, and Scarecrow in a story that emphasizes Batman’s psychological struggle. The game earned critical acclaim for its gameplay, atmosphere, and storytelling, and became a defining superhero video game.

After the Joker attacks Gotham City Hall, Batman captures him and takes him to Arkham Asylum. The asylum is temporarily holding many members of Joker’s gang, transferred after a fire at Blackgate Prison. Suspecting the Joker wanted to be caught, Batman escorts him inside. The trap springs when Harley Quinn seizes control of Arkham’s security and the Joker escapes into the facility. With help from a corrupt guard, Joker has Commissioner Gordon kidnapped, then threatens to detonate bombs hidden across Gotham City if anyone tries to enter Arkham—forcing Batman to operate alone. Batman tracks Quinn to the medical facility to rescue Gordon, but is exposed to Scarecrow’s fear toxin and suffers terrifying hallucinations, including visions of Gordon’s death and his parents’ corpses speaking to him. After driving off Scarecrow, Batman subdues Quinn and rescues Gordon. Joker then lures Batman to Bane, who has been held and experimented on by Arkham doctor Penelope Young. Joker frees Bane, and Batman is forced into a brutal fight while Quinn slips away. Batman retreats to a hidden Batcave installation on the island to restock his gadgets. There, Batman uncovers Joker’s real objective: access to Dr. Young and her work on Titan, a stronger version of the Venom drug that gives Bane his strength. Young intended Titan to help patients withstand more strenuous therapies, but discovered Joker had secretly funded her research to create an army of superhuman henchmen. When she refused to hand over the formula, Joker returned to Arkham to take it by force. As Batman searches for Young, Scarecrow attacks again and doses him with fear toxin, triggering hallucinations of the night Bruce Wayne’s parents were murdered. Once he recovers, Batman destroys Young’s Titan formula and saves her from Victor Zsasz. A nearby explosion kills Young, and Joker secures the completed batches of Titan. At the penitentiary, Quinn releases Poison Ivy before Batman captures and imprisons Quinn. Quinn inadvertently reveals that Joker is running a Titan production operation in the Arkham botanical gardens. Batman heads there and learns Titan is produced using genetically modified plants. He persuades Ivy to help create an antidote, but the key ingredients require spores found only in Killer Croc’s sewer lair. On the way to Croc, Scarecrow attacks repeatedly, and Batman pushes through multiple doses of fear toxin. Meanwhile, Joker injects Ivy with Titan, amplifying her powers. Ivy unleashes giant mutant plants that begin tearing through Arkham Island. When Batman reaches Croc’s lair, Scarecrow is ambushed by Croc and dragged underwater. Batman retrieves the spores, subdues Croc, and returns to the Batcave—only to synthesize a single dose of the antidote before Ivy’s plants breach the cave and destroy his equipment. Batman returns to the botanical gardens and defeats Poison Ivy, stopping the rampaging plants. Joker announces that his “party” is finally ready, and Batman heads to the asylum’s visitor center, where Joker’s cheering henchmen greet him. Joker reveals he has Gordon again and fires a Titan-filled dart at him. Batman dives in to protect Gordon and is hit instead. Batman struggles to resist the transformation, and an enraged Joker overdoses on Titan, mutating into a massive monster. On the roof in a makeshift arena, Joker challenges Batman as Titan-altered creatures fight under the gaze of news helicopters. Batman refuses to transform, uses the antidote on himself, and defeats the Titan-mutated Joker and his henchmen—knocking Joker unconscious with an explosive gel-enhanced punch. Afterward, Titan’s effects begin to wear off, including on the Joker, who is restrained and taken into custody as police retake Arkham. Batman overhears a report of a Two-Face-led crime in progress and returns to Gotham City in the Batwing. In a post-credits scene, a crate of Titan formula floats in the ocean near the asylum, and a hand surfaces to grab it.
