Batman: Arkham Knight is a 2015 action-adventure game developed by Rocksteady Studios and the final entry in the Arkham series. Players control Batman as he confronts Scarecrow, who unites Gotham’s criminals to destroy the Dark Knight, aided by the mysterious new adversary known as the Arkham Knight. The game features open-world exploration, stealth, combat, and puzzle-solving, with the Batmobile added for traversal and combat. The story explores Batman’s psychological struggles and the breakdown of his alliances as Gotham descends into chaos. Prologue Nine months after the Joker’s death, crime in Gotham City has dropped sharply, but Batman expects a new threat and continues his watch over the city. Before he died, the Joker sent his mutated blood to Gotham hospitals, infecting several patients. Most were cured, but untreated victims are beginning to look and behave like the Joker. Batman works on a cure for the mutations and orders Robin to monitor the infected. The Arkham Knight On Halloween night, Scarecrow releases a new strain of Fear Gas in a diner and threatens to spread it across Gotham. Six million civilians evacuate, but criminals and supervillains remain, leaving Commissioner James Gordon and the Gotham City Police Department outnumbered. Batman investigates Scarecrow’s return and searches a rooftop safehouse, where he finds and rescues Poison Ivy, held captive by Scarecrow’s men. From a makeshift Batcave in Gotham’s Clock Tower, Barbara Gordon gathers intel on the new toxin and traces its production to Ace Chemicals. Batman heads there, but is confronted by the mysterious Arkham Knight and his militia, backed by a massive army of unmanned tanks. Fighting through the militia, Batman learns from workers that Scarecrow intends to trigger a chemical explosion large enough to blanket the entire eastern seaboard in fear toxin. Batman reaches Scarecrow, who reveals that the Arkham Knight has abducted Barbara before escaping. While limiting the blast radius, Batman is exposed to fear toxin, which reacts with his own mutated blood and causes hallucinations of the Joker. After escaping the Ace Chemicals explosion, Batman is forced to tell Gordon about Barbara’s involvement in his war on crime. Furious, Gordon vows to find his daughter without Batman’s help. Scarecrow’s Plans Batman tracks the Arkham Knight into an underground tunnel network to learn Barbara’s location, but is ambushed. He pursues the militia convoy, only to discover the driver is a decoy using a voice synthesizer to mimic the Arkham Knight. Under interrogation, the driver reveals they are headed to North Refrigeration. Batman and Nightwing question the Penguin, who says the Arkham Knight and Scarecrow are meeting with businessman Simon Stagg, head of a pharmaceutical company. Boarding Stagg’s airship, Batman learns Scarecrow paid Stagg to build a device called the Cloudburst, but Stagg tried to double-cross them and was dosed with fear toxin as punishment. After reaching Scarecrow and interrogating Stagg, Batman is exposed again, triggering an intense hallucinogenic episode. Scarecrow escapes with the Cloudburst. Scarecrow then messages Batman, revealing Barbara is being held in the same safehouse where Ivy was imprisoned. Before Batman can reach her, Barbara is exposed to fear toxin and shoots herself in the head. Batman and Alfred Pennyworth are devastated, but Alfred urges Batman not to lose hope for Barbara’s sake. Alfred explains that the Cloudburst is a dispersal device meant to flood all of Gotham with fear toxin. To counter it, Batman turns to Poison Ivy, who takes control of a massive tree that grows giant flowers capable of neutralizing the toxin.
