Storyline
Cold and Ruthless Place
Our galaxy has been scarred by epic wars raging for millennia. It is a cold and ruthless place where the remnants of the Armada and Cortex factions continue to battle in an ancient struggle for domination. Most planetary resources have been depleted and turned into machines of destruction, only to fight and be reduced to wreck fields stretching to the horizon. These junkyards are a common sight on once-living, habitable planets. This is where the Scavengers story begins.
The Sardoth-11 Event
No one knows for certain where they came from, what made them alive and hungry for destruction. It may have been alien technology, a random short circuit in a processing unit, or a deliberate act of Mother Nature to end the destructive war between Armada and Cortex. One thing is certain: an unknown event influenced the AI algorithm of a group of Cortex bots left behind on Sardoth-11 after one of the major battles between the two factions.
Protocol 1: Scavenge
Their original algorithm was designed for a simple task: finish off the remaining Armada forces and establish an outpost on the planet. Yet, for some reason, they suddenly began doing something entirely different. They collected junk from the battlefield and used advanced resurrection technology powered by tachyons, particles that travel back in time, to restore life to the wrecks. This might have remained an interesting phenomenon for future scholars to analyze. But another fact changed everything.
Protocol 2: Multiply
The new resurrection process had another consequence: every unit restored by the Scavengers became infected with a copy of the same malicious algorithm. It instructed them to scavenge wreck fields and resurrect every piece of junk, repeating the process over and over. This unstoppable feedback loop caused exponential growth in their numbers, allowing them to take over the entire world of Sardoth-11 in just a few days.
Protocol 3: Upgrade
The scavenging algorithm had flaws, as expected from a protocol that arose for seemingly spontaneous reasons. Sometimes it could not rearrange unit pieces correctly and used scraps from the next wreck it found. At other times, the piece-recognition module malfunctioned, creating frightening Frankenstein-like unit mashups. Some became useless abominations, but others proved even stronger than the sum of their parts.
After nearly all metal on the planet had been used, some fragments remained too damaged or broken to form operational units. However, the scavenger protocol was strict about metal: every remaining scrap had to be used. The spare metal was added as armor and weapons to original units, creating larger and stronger versions. They were even able to build the terrifying giant Commanders.
