Black Mesa

Black Mesa is a reimagining of Valve’s classic sci-fi first-person shooter Half-Life, built on the Source Engine. Return as Gordon Freeman and relive his journey through the Black Mesa Research Facility, with detailed environments, a large cast of characters, and experimental weaponry. New music, voice acting, choreography, and added dialogue expand the story for a more immersive experience.

Black Mesa follows a plot nearly identical to Half-Life’s story through the “Lambda Core” chapter. You play as Gordon Freeman, a scientist at the Black Mesa Research Facility, tasked with placing a sample of a strange material into an electromagnetic instrument—using the Hazardous Environment Suit Mark IV to do it safely. The test triggers a “resonance cascade,” devastating the facility and tearing open an interdimensional rift to the alien world of Xen, allowing its creatures to pour into Earth. Freeman survives, finds other survivors, and fights his way toward the surface under the protection of his hazard suit to seek help. But once outside, he discovers armed forces are cleansing the facility of all life—human and alien alike. From other scientists, Freeman learns the only way to stop the invasion is to cross into Xen and destroy the entity keeping the portal open.
