About
Bungie has stressed that Destiny’s universe will feel “alive,” with events that can occur in-game without being strictly controlled or scripted by the developer, creating an evolving experience. Destiny is described as a first-person shooter with massively multiplayer online game (MMO) elements, though Bungie avoids labeling it a traditional MMO. Instead, it’s called a “shared-world shooter,” since it lacks many standard MMO traits.
For example, rather than letting players see and interact with everyone on a server at once, Destiny uses on-the-fly matchmaking so you only encounter other players the game matches you with. Destiny also uses a new engine that combines global illumination with real-time dynamic lighting. Improvements to Bungie’s “hopper” technology—the foundation of Halo’s matchmaking—aim to create better matches and a more natural feel in both cooperative and competitive multiplayer.
Storyline
Setting
Destiny is set in the distant future, after the Collapse ended the Golden Age that began with the discovery of the Traveler and drove humanity to the brink of extinction. The force behind the Collapse is known as the Darkness, which indirectly serves as the primary antagonist. Guardians battle the Darkness and its forces across multiple locations throughout the Solar System.
Plot
The story begins when the player’s Ghost resurrects them as a Guardian after they have been dead for an unknown amount of time. Soon after, the Guardian is forced into a fight with the Fallen, who have taken over the ruins of the Cosmodrome in Old Russia. With help from the Ghost, the Guardian secures a jumpship and escapes to the Tower, home to the Guardians on the border of the City.
After being equipped and introduced to the Vanguard and the Gunsmith, the Guardian and Ghost learn from Amanda Holliday that their Arcadia-class jumpship is missing its warp drive, a key component for interplanetary travel. With working ships and parts in short supply, the Guardian must return to the place where the ship was found and search for the missing component.
