Set in the fictional Hope County, Montana, the story follows the rise of preacher Joseph Seed. Believing he has been chosen to protect the people of Hope County from an “inevitable collapse,” Seed forms a congregation called Eden’s Gate. While it claims to offer salvation, Eden’s Gate is in fact a militaristic doomsday cult. Through coercion and violence, the cult forces conversions, and uses intimidation to prevent residents from contacting the federal government. When an attempt to arrest Seed results in the deaths of several lawmen, the player is drawn into an armed conflict between Eden’s Gate and the Hope County residents forming a resistance. The player takes the role of a sheriff’s deputy sent to Hope County to arrest Seed. Seed calls himself “the Father” and maintains control with the help of his siblings, known as “the Heralds”: Jacob, a former military officer who commands their armed soldiers; John, a lawyer who has acquired much of Hope County’s land for Eden’s Gate; and Faith, who presents herself as a pacifist and convinces people to believe in and trust her older brother. Opposing Seed are locals such as Pastor Jerome, a church leader who has watched Eden’s Gate take his congregation; Mary May, a bartender whose father was murdered by the cult; and Nick Rye, a crop-duster pilot determined to remove the cult’s influence to build a better future for his children.
