About
Lemonade Tycoon, originally released as Lemonade Inc., is a Shockwave-based business simulation game about selling lemonade for profit. A free, limited version was available online through many sites, while the unrestricted full version could be purchased online.
Players manage every part of their lemonade business, including recipes, prices, and stand locations. Changing weather and news affect sales, requiring players to adapt their strategy. Upgrades can help address challenges such as long customer lines and limited stock. The packaged version was released for PC, mobile phones, Windows Mobile Professional devices, and Palm devices. Its "Game-On" feature allows save files to be transferred between a Windows PC and a Palm handheld or Windows Mobile Professional device.
Lemonade Tycoon differs slightly across platforms. The Windows version provides more detailed information and larger location views due to its larger screen, while other versions show less information and only portions of some areas. All platforms retain the game's usability and functionality. Lemonade Tycoon 2: New York Edition is also available for Mac OS X, published by MacPlay.
The final update, version 1.1.9, was called Lemonade Tycoon Deluxe and added new levels along with a slightly improved user interface. Electronic Arts published an iPhone version of Lemonade Tycoon in 2009.
Gameplay
Lemonade Tycoon includes three game modes: Career, Challenge, and Champion. Career mode allows players to run a lemonade stand for as long as they want. Challenge mode has a 30-day limit and tests how quickly a stand can grow.
To sell lemonade, players must purchase supplies, including ice, lemons, sugar, and cups. Players can also advertise each day by paying an advertising fee, with different advertising options available. Advertising increases the number of potential customers.
The game features upgrades at different prices. Some reduce wait times, improve visibility, or make ice. Stand upgrades increase storage and customer capacity. Employees, including a cashier and a clown, charge daily fees to reduce wait times and increase customer patience.
Players can move their stand among five locations. Each location has different rent, popularity, and customer satisfaction. Popularity changes as a player's stand becomes more popular, while strong satisfaction and advertising attract more customers. Customers are more likely to return when lines are short, prices are good, all customers are served, and the recipe is effective. Satisfaction and popularity are tied to each location and do not transfer when the stand moves.
News headlines can either improve or hurt lemonade sales. Headlines change every game day and may sometimes affect only one location. Weather also affects sales: warm and hot days bring more customers than cold, rainy days. Weather changes daily and does not appear to follow predictable patterns.
The Lemonade Stock Exchange, or LSX, was an online feature that allowed players to compare their stand with others.
Reception
Lemonade Tycoon won Best Pocket PC Strategy Game at the 2002 Pocket PC Magazine's Best Products Awards.
Learning Planet, an educational website, created the original version of the game to teach students economics and resource management. The LearningPlanet.com version of Lemonade Tycoon is visually different but functionally identical to the other versions.
