About

MUGEN is a 2D fighting game engine developed by Elecbyte. Its community-created content includes thousands of fighters, both original characters and characters from popular fiction.

Storyline

M.U.G.E.N is a customizable fighting game engine whose creators often adapt popular characters from 2D fighting games such as Street Fighter, as well as TV, book, and game franchises including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Simpsons, Pingu, Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pokemon, Sailor Moon, and Touhou. Many authors also create original content. Websites throughout the Mugen Community showcase and distribute these creations. Games built with the M.U.G.E.N engine often focus on a single franchise, such as Hyper Dragon Ball Z. Because the engine is highly customizable, no two versions of M.U.G.E.N are the same. Players are encouraged to download their own copy of the engine and create or add content based on personal preference. Groups of M.U.G.E.N authors often collaborate to develop complete games with the engine. These games vary in quality and are released under the general M.U.G.E.N license: "Under this license, permission is granted to use the M.U.G.E.N Environment free of charge for non-commercial purposes... Elecbyte provides a M.U.G.E.N redistributable package, containing a minimal M.U.G.E.N Environment, that may be included with third party content for redistribution."
