About
Nintendogs is a real-time pet simulation game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS handheld console. First released in Japan, it later launched in North America, Australia, Europe, and other regions. The game originally released in three versions: Dachshund & Friends, Lab & Friends, known as Shiba & Friends in Japan, and Chihuahua & Friends. It was later re-released as Nintendogs: Best Friends, bundled with a special-edition Nintendo DS, and as Nintendogs: Dalmatian & Friends.
Using the Nintendo DS touchscreen and built-in microphone, Nintendogs lets players pet, care for, and train their dogs. The touchscreen is used for petting and interacting with found or purchased items, including balls, frisbees, toys, and grooming supplies. Players use the microphone to call dogs by name and teach commands such as "sit" and "roll over." Dogs can be taken on walks or to the park, and players can interact with others through the DS wireless linkup. The DS internal clock and calendar affect each dog's hunger and cleanliness over elapsed time.
Nintendogs received critical acclaim, earning an aggregate 85% score on Game Rankings and awards including PC World's 2006 Innovation Award and the Associated Press award for Best Handheld Game. As of March 31, 2015, all versions had sold 23.96 million copies worldwide, making Nintendogs the second best-selling Nintendo DS game behind New Super Mario Bros. Its success led to related products, including Nintendogs toys and trading cards. A sequel, Nintendogs + Cats, was announced at E3 2010 for the Nintendo 3DS.
