Every exile is given the same choice: sink or swim. Those who survive wash up on the forsaken shores of Wraeclast, where the only welcome is the clinging embrace of undeath. A small band of survivors holds out in a ruined lighthouse, desperately fending off grasping undead and manic scavengers clinging to their last shreds of humanity. Under the looming gaze of Axiom Prison, snarling goatmen stalk the craggy bluffs, keeping their cloven feet well away from rhoa-infested swamps in the lowlands. Along the coastline, rotting shipwrecks choke the shore, and the spirits of stranded sailors still haunt the wreckage of their doomed vessels, eager to unleash sorrow and rage on the living. All the while, the Siren continues her sweet, sad song, luring more ships to watery graves. Farther inland, through twisting caves and dark forests, the ruins of civilisation grow more visible. Time has reduced buildings to rubble and stripped away decaying flesh, leaving only grotesquely grinning bones. Fetid caverns and underground passages become a clattering refuge for skeletal ranks, while open woods and riverways teem with blood-hungry beasts. Recently, ragtag bands of ruthless bandits have raised fortified camps in the forest, openly challenging one another as they extort food and supplies from a small, struggling village perched between them atop a stone dam. Ignored by the feuding bandits, unsettling newcomers in black armor have been seen skulking through major ruins, their purpose both mysterious and ominous. High on a sheer cliff of ruptured mantle, straddling the river that feeds a mighty waterfall, lies the fallen capital of the Eternal Empire. Its former glory decays across a blasted cityscape of mouldering, decrepit buildings. Yet Sarn is far from empty. Many original citizens still lurk within, their humanity washed away by a cataclysm centuries ago. These Undying monsters roam at night and hide in shadow by day, as bare sunlight is anathema to their shrivelled, leathery skin. But even the sun-scarred hours are not peaceful. A legion from Oriath occupies the western side of the river, waging all-out war against the city’s many horrors. Each day, their black-clad soldiers fight twisted insects that scuttle, breed, and feed on anything that moves. Each day, they hurl battalions at floating red Ribbons that eviscerate trespassers. Each day, they clash with a small group of exiles barricaded on an island in the middle of the river, trapped between certain death on both shores.
