Under Defeat

Under Defeat is a shoot 'em up arcade game by G.rev, released for the Sega Dreamcast in March 2006. Set in an alternate reality based on World War II, the game controversially has players control German-speaking characters under the banner of the Empire. They fight the English-speaking Union, whose weapons are modeled after those of real-life Allied and Axis powers. For example, the naval units in Level 2 closely resemble Imperial Japanese warships. Released late in the Dreamcast's lifespan, the game sold better than expected, likely because no other home ports were planned in the near future. Players control a helicopter that can rotate using a more limited version of the mechanic from Zero Gunner 2. Gameplay is largely traditional and strongly resembles older Toaplan games, especially Twin Cobra. Under Defeat uses 3D graphics and a slightly angled perspective to add more depth than most games in the genre. On October 27, 2011, G.rev announced Under Defeat HD, a remake for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Rising Star Games released it in Japan on February 23, 2012, in the UK on November 9, 2012, and for PlayStation 3 in North America on November 28, 2012. It was released in Europe on January 25, 2013. The North American Xbox 360 version launched as a Games on Demand download-only title on August 26, 2014. An upgraded version of Under Defeat HD for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 was developed for the Sega Ring Edge 2 arcade system as Under Defeat HD+. This version is coming to arcades with improvements through Sega's ALL.NET, including a horizontal orientation mode, greater battlefield detail, and a New Order mode that apparently lets players choose from different aircraft types.

Under Defeat is set during an alternate World War II-inspired conflict between the German-speaking Empire and the English-speaking Union. Players pilot an Imperial attack helicopter through a brutal aerial campaign against the Union's military forces.
