Battlefield 1 tells its World War I story through a gritty anthology rather than a single linear campaign. After a harrowing prologue, the single-player mode is presented as five standalone “War Stories,” each offering a personal view of the Great War across different fronts and roles, highlighting the human cost, chaos, and moments of heroism. Storm of Steel (Prologue): The campaign opens in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in 1918 with the Harlem Hellfighters, an African-American infantry regiment. The prologue emphasizes the futility and brutality of trench warfare by shifting the player to a new soldier each time they die, underscoring how quickly lives are lost. It ends with a tense standoff between a lone Hellfighter and a German stormtrooper, where both, exhausted and surrounded by the dead, lower their weapons in a moment of shared humanity. Through Mud and Blood: Set during the Battle of Cambrai in 1917, this war story follows the British Mark V tank “Black Bess.” You play as Danny Edwards, an inexperienced former chauffeur assigned as the tank’s driver. Led by the cynical Commander Townsend, the crew fights through France’s mud-soaked battlefields while dealing with mechanical failures, heavy enemy fire, and internal tension. A key moment involves using a messenger pigeon to call a risky artillery strike on their own position to avoid being overrun. They push through to Cambrai, but only after significant sacrifice. Friends in High Places: This story moves to aerial combat over France and follows Clyde Blackburn, an American gambler who impersonates British pilot George Rackham. Told as a flashback by an older Blackburn, it tracks his shift from self-serving opportunist to genuine hero as he fights alongside his gunner, Wilson. Missions include dogfights with German aces, escorting British bombers, and a dramatic attack on a German Zeppelin over London, exploring redemption and the blurred line between truth and legend. Avanti Savoia!: Set in the Alps, this war story centers on the Italian front against Austro-Hungarian forces and follows two brothers, Luca and Matteo, serving with the elite Arditi. Framed as an elderly Luca recounting events to his daughter, it depicts brutal mountain warfare in harsh, snowy terrain. Wearing heavy armor and wielding a powerful machine gun, Luca supports an assault on a fortified position, culminating in tragedy when an artillery barrage triggers an avalanche and Luca searches for his brother afterward. The Runner: During the Gallipoli Campaign, you play as Frederick Bishop, an Australian ANZAC runner tasked with carrying critical messages across heavily defended Ottoman lines. Bishop mentors a younger, idealistic soldier, Jack Foster, while confronting the harsh realities of war. The gameplay emphasizes stealth and quick action, and the story ends with Bishop’s sacrifice to protect a British warship and save countless lives. Nothing is Written: The final war story takes place in the Middle Eastern desert, where Arab tribes rebel against the Ottoman Empire. You play as Zara Ghufran, a Bedouin warrior fighting alongside T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia). Centered on sabotaging the armored Ottoman train “Canavar,” Zara uses desert knowledge and guerrilla tactics—assassinating commanders and gathering intelligence. The missions support multiple approaches, from stealth to open combat, culminating in a final confrontation with the train.
