Storyline
Battlefield 4’s Campaign follows a mostly chronological military shooter story with the player permanently cast as Recker. It begins in Baku, Azerbaijan, where Tombstone Squad—Recker, Dunn, Irish, and Pac—escapes the city carrying vital intelligence while Russian special forces pursue them. The team becomes trapped in a civilian car that plunges into the sea. Critically wounded and pinned between the seats, Dunn gives Recker his pistol and orders him to shoot out the windshield. Recker reluctantly does so; Dunn drowns as the others escape. As Tombstone surfaces, they overhear their commanding officer, Captain Garrison, discussing the intel: Admiral Chang is planning a military coup d’etat, and if he succeeds he will gain full Russian support, corroborating an earlier report from an asset in China.
Tombstone returns to the USS Valkyrie, an amphibious assault carrier heading toward China’s eastern coast. Garrison tells them Chinese presidential candidate Jin Jie has been assassinated, and Chang has convinced China that the United States is responsible. Garrison sends Tombstone—now led by Recker—on a covert mission in Shanghai to rescue three VIPs: Kovic, Hannah, and Hannah’s husband. With Tombstone’s help, Kovic evacuates the VIPs to the Valkyrie by helicopter. Tombstone then escapes the shore on a civilian tourist boat just as an electromagnetic pulse disables local electronics. Seeing other civilian refugees stranded on boats, Irish insists on guiding them to the Valkyrie over Pac’s objections.
Aboard the Valkyrie, the crew heads to the USS Titan, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier that can assist them, only to find it badly damaged by Chang’s Chinese military. Garrison orders Tombstone to search the sinking wreck for crucial intelligence, with Kovic acting as squad leader after Recker loses the position for failing to stop Irish in Shanghai. Tombstone retrieves a hard drive containing pre-attack data and fights through boarding Chinese soldiers. As the Titan splits while going under, Tombstone is forced to abandon ship. They return to the Valkyrie in a hijacked assault boat and find it under siege, then board to repel the attack. Kovic is mortally wounded in the fighting, restores Recker as Tombstone’s leader, and dies. Tombstone secures the bridge and rescues Hannah’s husband and Garrison.
Garrison later briefs Recker and Pac on an assault on a Chinese-controlled Singapore airfield, aiming to break Chinese air superiority while a storm grounds their aircraft. Hannah volunteers to join Tombstone, angering Irish, who was not part of the briefing. The assault succeeds, but most allied forces are lost during the advance. On a bridge toward the airfield, Recker is trapped by a car shoved by the wind; before Tombstone can free him, a freighter crashes into the bridge and throws the squad into the sea. They survive and reach the airfield through a sewer. After Pac fires a signal flare, Tombstone attempts to escape in an enemy vehicle, but missile strikes knock them out and Pac appears to die. Hannah seemingly betrays the squad by bringing Chinese soldiers to capture Tombstone, and Recker and Irish are incapacitated.
Recker and Irish are transported to a Chinese prison in the Kunlun Mountains, interrogated about Shanghai under Chang’s watch, and imprisoned. Recker is awakened by Dima, a Russian prisoner suffering radiation poisoning. Recker helps Dima free the other inmates, sparking a prison riot and reuniting with Irish. Chinese troops assault the facility; Recker and Irish hold them off long enough for Dima to open the gates, but they are then confronted by Hannah and other soldiers. Hannah shoots the soldiers holding Recker, Irish, and Dima at gunpoint and reveals she had been assigned to protect Jin Jie, who had been posing as her husband. The group fights through the mountains to a cable car, but an enemy helicopter shoots it down, and Dima is killed in the crash.
On foot for two days, the squad treks down the mountain, hunting for food to survive. They find a jeep and drive to Tashgar, a city under siege by both Chinese and Russian forces. During the journey, Hannah explains she brought Jin Jie to meet her family to give them hope, but Chang’s forces came the next day and killed them; Irish is horrified and apologizes. In Tashgar, they meet Major Greenland, who leads the remaining U.S. ground forces and warns that Russian mobile anti-air is putting them at a disadvantage. Tombstone volunteers to destroy a dam to flood the area, wiping out Chinese-Russian forces in exchange for transport back to the Valkyrie. They complete the mission and are redirected to the Suez Canal.
Using the Fulton surface-to-air recovery system, a U.S. C-130 extracts them, then they are dropped back to the Valkyrie, which is sailing blindly into Chang’s forces. Tombstone helps clear the deck of Chinese boarders and finds Garrison sheltered with Jin Jie, other survivors, and Pac—alive after Singapore and having escaped while badly wounded. When Chinese soldiers reach the medical bay, Jin Jie persuades Recker to let him reveal himself, since the troops have been fighting under the belief that he is dead. Recker opens the door and is knocked down, but Jin Jie shows his face and calms the standoff; the soldiers celebrate his return and call off the attack.
Chang responds by bombarding the Valkyrie with his warship, intent on “burying the truth and everyone with it.” With no ordnance to strike back, Recker, Irish, and Hannah volunteer to destroy the warship with explosives. They approach by boat, plant remote charges from the ship’s blind spot, and use grappling guns to pull themselves to safety beneath the Suez Canal Bridge before triggering the blast. When the remote detonation fails, the charges must be replaced manually. Hannah offers to go, but Irish stops her, insisting China will need her. Recker must choose: do nothing and allow Chang’s warship to destroy the Valkyrie—killing Pac, Garrison, and Jin Jie—or send either Hannah or Irish to set the explosives. Once the detonator turns green, Recker detonates the charges, destroying Chang’s ship but killing whoever went down to make it possible. A U.S. rescue helicopter retrieves Recker and the surviving teammate and reports to Garrison that one member is missing in action. During the credits, the player hears a new conversation between Irish and Hannah about their pasts and how they must keep moving forward with “no fucking regrets.”
