About
Mortal Kombat X is the tenth main entry in the one-on-one fighting series and a sequel to 2011’s Mortal Kombat. It closely follows the visual style and mechanics of the 2011 reboot. Controls still center on two types of punches and kicks plus blocking, enabling combos alongside uppercuts, teleports, weapon-based special moves, and fatalities. The three-tiered energy system returns, allowing X-Ray moves, powered-up EX moves, and combo breakers. As introduced in Injustice: Gods Among Us, fighters can interact with the environment to reposition or use objects as weapons. Each character has three variations with different moves and weapons, and the sprinting gauge from Mortal Kombat 4 returns.
Storyline
The story takes place about 20 years after the previous game’s ending, which revealed that Shinnok used the void after Shao Kahn’s death to launch an attack on Earthrealm with an army of Netherrealm forces. Several characters unite to steal Shinnok’s amulet and imprison him within it. However, Mileena later sets a plan in motion to free Shinnok by delivering the amulet to Quan Chi, who escaped when Shinnok was sealed away. The time gap also introduces new fighters, including Cassie—daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade (who married and divorced)—Kotal Kahn as Outworld’s new emperor, and Takeda, the son of Kenshi.
